Scanner Programming
Programming a scanner with the scanner interface your scanner has works.
However it can be a bear from time to time and if you loose your programming for any
reason,
re-entering the information can be a major PITA.
So at the very least you should acquire some sort of scanner information back up program.
These types of programs are the very basic of what a scanner program can do.
** Providing your scanner supports a computer interface. **
If your scanner does not support any computer interface or cloning
there is no reason for you to read any further on this page.

I use Radio Shack/GRE handheld scanners as of this writing. For the PRO-92/PRO-2067, PRO-93/PRO-2053, PRO-95, PRO-96 and PRO-99 there are programs out there for data backup and bank management. There are commercially available programs and there are FREE programs. Without diminishing the value of the commercially available programs, I am very partial to programs created by Don Starr at www.starrsoft.com. Not only are these programs very user friendly and reliable but with the exception of the PRO-96 and PRO-99 programs they are FREE! StarrSoft provides the programs on their website and they are available for download and immediate usage and satisfaction. StarrSoft also provides a converter program so you can easily go between any of the supported formats. StarrSoft's program also does one better by "unlocking" frequencies before not available for your scanner. Suppose you want the frequency of 318.0000 MHz, if you try to program this frequency with your radio you will get an error, however with a WinXX program, you can enter and listen in to these before locked frequencies. StarrSoft also provides you with methods to move your channels in and out of Microsoft XL which easily be used as the beginning of your frequency database. I can not stress the importance and value of these FREE or really inexpensive programs to manage your radio. If you do not have the latest and greatest scanner with a million channels, StarrSoft's programs and your computer or laptop give you a Virtually Unlimited Memory Scanner.
Here is a sample P95 file for the PRO-95.
The file contains complete programming for the Washoe County and surrounding area.
This includes both the Washoe County Community Radio System on
EDACS
as well as Nevada Shared Radio System on EDACS.
To use StarrSoft's or any other computer programs and a Radio Shack/GRE scanner you will need an interface cable to connect your computer to your scanner. There are a couple of sources for your scanner programming cable. The first and most obvious is Radio Shack and part #200-0289 Scanner Programming Cable. The other source is Black Bag Software and there cable for interfacing your Radio Shack/GRE scanner and your computer. There are minor subtle differences in these two programming cables. The in-depth particulars will be covered later but for you the first immediate and obvious difference is that the cable from Black Bag Software puts your scanner in cloning mode as soon as it is plugged in where as the Radio Shack 200-0289 cable does not. This has an advantage if you want to leave your programming cable plugged in and still be able to listen to your scanner. However it is recommended by most to use the Black Bag Software cable over the Radio Shack 200-0289.
